Aquarium Setup: The substrate should be a fine gravel, with rocks and stones. Submerged driftwood and freshwater plants will provide some shelter and a supplemental food source. However, Black Ruby Barbs do like wide open spaces for swimming, so their tank should not be to heavily planted. The plants are best placed at the sides and corners of the tank, leaving the center open for free swimming. Black Ruby Barbs are best kept in schools of ten or more fish and are a very active fish that will occasionally try to jump out of their tank, so an aquarium hood is highly recommended.
Sexing: Males can easily be identified by their bright red coloration, that they develop at a breeding age. Females will have a more rounded belly than males and are larger and heavier than their male tank companions.
Breeding: The breeding tank should contain soft/acidic water, fine leaved plants, and some marbles or a spawning grid on the bottom, which will allow the eggs to drop safely out of the parents reach. To acquire a suitable breeding pair, put at least 6 to 8 possible breeders in to the tank and condition them with live foods for a few days. Once a suitable breeding pair has been established, move the rest out. Spawning will usually take place in the morning hours and the female will lay around 200 clear/yellowish colored eggs, which the male will immediately fertilize. At this time the breeding pair should be removed to prevent the parents from damaging the eggs.
