The Convict Tang (Acanthurus triostegus) is also known as the Convict Surgeonfish, it’s one of the more interesting fish in coloration. They have a stunning white to silver body highlighted by six vertical black bars. Though it’s white and black striped appearance may seem rather plain to some, the coloration this fish takes on under good lighting is quite striking.
They may sometimes tend to be a little aggressive with other Convict Tangs but can be kept in groups providing they are all added at the same time to prevent territorial fighting.
A school of Convict Tangs makes for a great addition to the reef or fish only display in a larger home aquarium or public display tank.
The Convict Tang can tend to be harassed and bullied by other tang species and is best kept with other more peaceful tangs such as Naso and Sailfin Tangs.
The Convict Tang can be quite beneficial in helping pick at hair algae, they like to spend their days picking at rockwork and occasionally sand in search for hair algae & other organisms to eat.
