Temperament with other species: Peaceful.
Tank Level: All Levels.
Lifespan: 6 years.
Aquarium Setup: The substrate should be a fine gravel, with large rocks and stones. Submerged driftwood and freshwater plants will provide some shelter and a supplemental food source. However, these fish do like wide open space for swimming, so their tank should not be to heavily planted. The plants are best placed at the sides and corners of the tank, leaving the center open for free swimming. Filament Barbs are best kept in schools of 8 to 10 or more.
Sexing: Mature males develop a more intense colour pattern than females. Adult females tend to grow a little larger, are heavier bodied, and less colourful.
Breeding: The breeding tank should contain soft/acidic water, fine leaved plants, and some marbles or a spawning grid on the bottom, which will allow the eggs to drop safely out of the parents reach. To acquire a suitable breeding pair, put at least 6 to 8 possible breeders in to the tank and condition them with live foods for a few days. Once a suitable breeding pair has been established, move the rest out. The female will scatter her eggs, which the male will immediately fertilize. At this time the breeding pair should be removed to prevent the parents from damaging the eggs. They will hatch in approximately 30 hours, and the fry will be free swimming in a few days.
