The Fire-tail Dottyback looks like a cross between a wrasse and a grouper but is not related to either species. Dottybacks are a valued asset to most reef keepers in the hobby as they are usually small and often brightly colored. The Fire-tail Dottyback is quite often found alone and occasionally in small groups along coral reefs and rocky reef slopes. They live inside reef structures, often at the back of caves and are a very territorial and aggressive about their boundaries. They enjoy darting in and out of rocky crevices and recesses of seaward facing reefs in moderate surge zones where they feed on small fish and invertebrates.
