The Harlequin Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides) is also known as Spotted Sweetlips, Clown Sweetlips, and the Many-spotted Sweetlips. The Juvenile Harlequin Sweetlips has a light brown body color with large dark-edged, white blotches. As they grow, the brown base color disappears and much darker brown spots develop. As adults, they are a white body color with dark brown spots on the body and fins. They are also known in the hobby as "Grunts" because they can be heard to make a grunting sound which is produced by their flat teeth rubbing together and is amplified by their air bladders. Sweetlips can be easily distinguished from other species by their very large rubbery lips. The Harlequin Sweetlips quite often swim with their head pointing down and with exaggerated fin movements. They can be found singly and occasionally with others along the inner reef drop-off's of coral reefs, lagoons and seaward facing reefs. Although the juvenile Harlequin Sweetlips is often found alone close to shelter, where they use their colors and markings to mimic the movement of a poisonous flatworm for defense against predators. They are known to be nocturnal predators feeding on fish and benthic crustaceans.
