The Masked Grouper (Gracila albomarginata) is also known as the Red Edged Rockcod, Slenderspine Grouper, Thinspine Rockcod, White-Margined Grouper, and the White Square Grouper. The juvenile Masked grouper exhibits a striking purple body coloration with bright red markings on the outer edges of the tail area. While the adults mature into a dull gray-green coloration with a brownish colored mask over the eyes, a white square marking the rear of the body, finished usually with a pale white colored tail.
Like all Groupers, they are ambush predators and will spend much of their time hiding and watching for easy prey. As juveniles, they're found in rock crevices along the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific. While as adults they hunt near the bottom in deep water. Food is drawn into their mouths by a powerful suction action as they open their large mouths and the prey is swallowed whole. They like to feed on invertebrates and will eat any fish or invertebrates it can swallow. They are best kept in an aquarium with other fish its own size as smaller fish & invertebrates are guaranteed to be eaten. The Grouper is definitely a big eater. They prefer eating a wide variety of meaty seafood such as fish fillets, shrimp, clams, scallops and uncooked prawns.
