The Painted Swordtail is a wonderful color Swordtail. As the name suggests the Painted Swordtail sports a playful color pattern with an overlay of patches of black as if it was splashed with a bit of black paint.

The name Swordtail comes from the body of the male Swordtail. The bottom of the tail points out from the body like a sword. The female Swordtail has no sword and she can easily be distinguished from the male by her more rounded body shape.

Wild Swordtails are found from southern Mexico thru to Guatemalain Central America and they are closely related to platy fish with whom they can interbreed.

Swordtails come in red, black, green, albino and even neon colors.

You can choose between a lot of different Swordtail types, such as the Red Wag, the Pineapple Swordtail, the Gold tux Swordtail and the Lyretail.

Swordtails are often kept in freshwater community aquariums while brackish water is also possible.

The Swordtail fish is a livebearer, so unlike many other fish species a female Swordtail will give birth to live fry instead of eggs.
