Common name: Red Pencil Tetra or Ruby Red Pencilfish
Species name: Nannostomus mortenthaleri
Maximum size: 3 cm
Origin: South America.
Company: Red Pencil Tetra are suitable for a community aquarium.
Water parameters: Temperature 22 - 27°C and pH 6.0 - 7.5
Aquarium setup: Red Pencil Tetra should be kept in densely planted fine-leaf type tanks and have a partial cover of floating plants to diffuse the light. Arrange the tank in dark colors with dark gravel. They prefer clean filtered water with sand substrate and driftwood branches. As with all Tetra, they should always be kept in schools of 10 or more.
Breeding: Red Pencil Tetra can be bred in captivity, a dimly lit tank with some fine leaved plants on the bottom to catch the eggs will encourage breeding. Feed them small live foods for a few days prior until the female scatters her eggs on plants. Remove the pair once the breeding is concluded as with most tetra, they will eat their own eggs.
