Temperament with other species: Peaceful.
Tank Level: All Levels.
Lifespan: 5 years.
Aquarium Setup: Rosy Barbs will do best and are most effectively displayed in tanks that simulate their natural habitat. They will appreciate an aquarium with lots of dense vegetation and floating plants where they can seek cover. Provide a dark substrate and an open area in the center for swimming. Rosy Barbs are best kept in schools of ten or more.
Sexing: Rosy Barbs are difficult to sex when they are young. As they mature, the male becomes much redder in color and more slender in appearance. The female remains smaller in general.
Breeding: The breeding tank water temperature should be 22 - 25°C and contain a soft/acidic water with fine leaved plants, and some marbles or a spawning grid on the bottom, which will allow the eggs to drop safely out of the parents reach. To acquire a suitable breeding pair, put at least 6-8 possible breeders in to the tank and condition them with live foods for a few days. Once a suitable breeding pair has been established, move the rest out. Spawning will usually take place in the morning hours and the female will scatter her eggs, which the male will immediately fertilize. After the spawn, remove the parents as they will attempt to eat the eggs if they can reach them. The eggs will hatch in approximately 30 hours, and the fry will be free swimming in a few days.
