The Sargassum Angler (Histrio histrio) is also known as the Sargassum Frogfish, Marbled Angler, and the Mouse Fish. They have a body of mottled brown/tan coloration, its distinctive markings and coloration give it more of a rock-like appearance than that of a fish.
They range in natural body colors from light to dark brown with ornate markings. While their body can also freely change into any color or pattern to blend with its surrounding environment for camouflage. The Sargassum Anggler is a master of camouflage in its habitat. Most commonly found in amongst the Sargassum Algae, the Sargassum Angler completely mimics the Sargassum Algae with folds and tufts of skin. They may also inhabit rocky and coral reefs, where they like to feed on small fish, crustaceans, and worms.
The Anglerfish or Frogfish is a very unusual looking fish that is considered either very ugly by some or to be adorable by others.
They are a fascinating creature which has a built in "fishing pole" on its head with a pom-pom as bait, they wiggle this lure to attract prey such as small fish to come close to their mouths.
When a potential food source or animal approaches, the Anglerfish stays motionless with the exception of the wiggling lure. When the prey moves in to investigate the moving lure, the Frogfish rapidly opens its large mouth and sucks in its prey.
Their large mouths and extendable stomachs mean they can eat very large prey with ease. They have tubular gill openings behind the pectoral fins that contract and expand, pumping water in through the mouth and out of the gills. This behavior allows them to appear motionless to their unsuspecting prey.
Their tank should contain lots of live rock, coral and rubble work for the frogfish to hide in, so as that it simulates their natural environment. They will typically eat almost any meaty foods offered but may only accept live items at first. Though they should be gradually moved onto a captive diet over time, live shrimp, mollies, guppies and similar items can be used at first. Provide live foods while training it to take fresh/dead food from a wiggled feeding stick works well. While eventually, they can be trained to accept frozen clam, squid, shrimp, krill and similar items. It is not unusual for them to appear not to eat for the first few days once introduced to a new environment.
