Lifespan: 5 years.
Aquarium Setup: They thrive in a heavily planted or forest stream type set up, with a soft substrate, dim lighting, some roots, branches and leaf litter, while still leaving the center open for free swimming. They prefer clean well oxygenated water and a good filtrating system is highly beneficial. Snake Skin Barbs are best kept in schools of 6 to 10 or more.
Sexing: Males can be identified by their brighter coloration and slightly smaller sized bodies, While females will also have a broader, more rounded belly than males and are larger and much heavier than their male tank mates when in breeding condition.
Breeding: The breeding tank should contain soft/acidic water, fine leaved plants, and some marbles or a spawning grid on the bottom, which will allow the eggs to drop safely out of the parents reach. To acquire a suitable breeding pair, put at least 6 to 8 possible breeders in to the tank and condition them with live foods for a few days. Once a suitable breeding pair has been established, move the rest out. The female will scatter her eggs, which the male will immediately fertilize. At this time the breeding pair should be removed to prevent the parents from damaging the eggs. They will hatch in approximately 30 hours, and the fry will be free swimming in a few days.
