Temperament with other species: Peaceful - Semi Aggresive.
Tank Level: All Levels.
Lifespan: 7 years.
Aquarium Setup: The substrate should be a fine gravel, with large rocks and stones. Submerged driftwood and freshwater plants will provide some shelter and a supplemental food source. However, these fish do like wide open space for swimming, so their tank should not be to heavily planted. The plants are best placed at the sides and corners of the tank, leaving the center open for swimming. Tiger Barbs are best kept in schools of ten or more fish and are a very active fish that occasionally will try to jump out of their tank, so an aquarium hood is highly recommended.
Sexing: Males can be identified by their bright coloration, the red nose they develop during the spawning process and a distinct red line above the black on their dorsal fins. Females will have a broader, more rounded belly than males and are larger and heavier than their male tank mates.
Breeding: The breeding tank should contain soft/acidic water, fine leaved plants, and some marbles or a spawning grid on the bottom, which will allow the eggs to drop safely out of the parents reach. To acquire a suitable breeding pair, put at least 6 to 8 possible breeders in to the tank and condition them with live foods for a few days. Once a suitable breeding pair has been established, move the rest out. Spawning will usually take place in the morning hours and the female will lay around 200 clear/yellowish colored eggs, which the male will immediately fertilize. At this time the breeding pair should be removed to prevent the parents from damaging the eggs. They will hatch in approximately 36 hours, and the fry will be free swimming in around 5 to 6 days.
