The Yellowfin Scorpionfish (Scorpaenopsis neglecta) is also known as the Bandtail Stingfish. They are usually found sitting very still at the bottom of the sea along the continental shelf and occasionally solitary on open sand/mud bottoms, harbors and lagoons. They feed on small fish and swimming invertebrates. Scorpionfish are masters of camouflage, enabling them to lie in wait for their victims to come close, before lunging forward and inhaling their prey with their large mouths. When disturbed they raise the spines along their backs and will usually move off out of harm's way, however, if cornered they are able to charge at considerable speed. They hunt by ambushing their prey, as unsuspecting fish wander too close and in an instant get swallowed whole by the predator. Their large mouths and extendable stomachs mean they can eat very large prey with ease. They have tubular gill openings behind the pectoral fins that contract and expand, pumping water in through the mouth and out of the gills. This behavior allows them to appear motionless to their unsuspecting prey. While like most scorpaenids, the sting from the dorsal spines of this species can be Highly dangerous and poisonous with venomous spines along its back if trodden on, being the real danger to the victim.
